HackOHI/O, Ohio State University’s flagship hackathon, brings together hundreds of students from various backgrounds for an intense weekend of coding, collaboration, and creative exploration. During one recent edition, 99P Labs sponsored the Future Mobility Challenge to encourage participants to develop solutions that improve how people or goods move—whether through more efficient public transportation, better parking systems, safer roads, or eco-friendly deliveries.

At the outset of the challenge, teams received broad but practical guidelines: identify a specific mobility issue, propose a solution with real-world relevance, and prototype within the limited time. This open format allowed participants to pursue projects best suited to their unique skills and interests, resulting in a remarkable variety of submissions. More than 30 teams entered the competition, spanning disciplines such as computer vision, app design, hardware integration, and data-driven algorithms. Some tackled driver distraction and traffic congestion, while others optimized public transit systems or reimagined first- and last-mile transportation options.

After a whirlwind of brainstorming and development, three winning teams stood out for their blend of technical depth, feasibility, and social impact. Their ideas ranged from AI-driven parking assistance to on-the-fly vehicle safety monitoring and dynamic bus routing based on real-time data. By the end of the event, each of these prototypes demonstrated that even under time constraints, cross-disciplinary collaboration can yield tangible progress toward a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable mobility future.
