Is Gen Z Truly Connected?
Exploring chipii: Bridging Digital and Real-World Connections
The Integrated Product Development capstone project at Carnegie Mellon University focuses on understanding and addressing the mental wellness challenges faced by Generation Z in a digital age. Titled "chipii: Is Gen Z Truly Connected?", this initiative delves into how digital natives navigate social connections and mental health issues. The team conducted surveys and interviews with over 150 Gen Z participants across the United States to gain insights into their unique challenges and needs.
At the heart of the project is chipii, an innovative hardware-software solution designed to enhance social confidence and foster meaningful connections among Gen Z users. Chipii integrates generative AI, biometrics, and personalized coaching to help users improve their social skills and reduce feelings of isolation. By analyzing vocal cues, physiological data, and user interactions, chipii provides tailored feedback and strategies to build social confidence and improve overall wellness.
Chipii's comprehensive approach includes a wearable device and a user-friendly app. The wearable device monitors physiological signals such as heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), providing real-time data on the user's emotional state. The app uses this data, along with vocal analysis, to offer personalized coaching and feedback. Users can engage in exercises and activities designed to enhance their social skills, receive reminders for social interactions, and track their progress over time.
A key feature of chipii is its ability to bridge the gap between virtual and real-world interactions. The system encourages users to practice social skills in real-world settings, helping them build confidence and establish genuine connections. Through a cycle of preparation, engagement, and reflection, chipii guides users in navigating social situations, from casual conversations to more formal interactions. This iterative process helps users develop a deeper understanding of their social behaviors and make meaningful improvements.
The project highlights a promising approach to mental health and wellness for Generation Z, leveraging advanced technology to address the complexities of social interactions in a digital world. By combining generative AI, biometrics, and personalized coaching, chipii offers a holistic solution that empowers users to build social confidence and foster meaningful connections. The team’s work on chipii demonstrates the potential of innovative technology to make a positive impact on mental wellness and social connectivity.
